In a method of cutting a metal workpiece by an oxygen torch cutting machine, preheating flames from the cutting torch are reciprocated across the edge of the workpiece before the cutting oxygen jet is turned on to start the cut. The reciprocating movement of the torch and the turning on of the cutting oxygen are automatically controlled.
