Abstract

1,270,473. Graft polymers. STANDARD OIL CO. 1 Oct., 1969 [1 Oct., 1968; 24 April, 1969], No. 48158/69. Heading C3G. A mixture comprising (A) acrylonitrile, (B) an alpha-olefin of formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are C 1 to C 7 -alkyl groups, said alpha-olefin not containing more than 10 carbon atoms, and (C) 0 to 20%, based on the weight of A + B + C of a monoalkenyl monomer other than (A) or (B) is polymerized in the presence of (D) a copolymer of butadiene or isoprene and at least one nitrile of formula wherein R is hydrogen, a C 1 to C 4 -alkyl group or a halogen, said copolymer containing 50 to 95% by weight of said diene and 50 to 5% of said nitrile. The polymerization is preferably carried out in aqueous emulsion. Examples are given in which monomers (A), (B) and (C) and copolymers (D) are as follows: (i) acrylonitrile and isobutylene, 2-methylbutene- 1 or 2-methylpentene-1 and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer; (ii) acrylonitrile, isobutylene and butadiene-acrylonitrile-methacrylonitrile copolymer or butadiene-methacrylonitrile copolymer; (iii) acrylonitrile, isobutylene, methacrylonitrile and . butadiene - acrylonitrile copolymer and (iv) acrylonitrile, isobutylene together with alphamethylstyrene, N-tert.-octyl acrylamide or methyl methacrylate, and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer. In comparative examples, a mixture of acrylonitrile with other mono- or diethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon monomers or vinylchloride is polymerized in the presence of butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer.
