Abstract

1,270,117. Carriage for working on ship's hull; motor vehicles. ASPLUNDPATENTER A.B. 3 Oct., 1969, No. 48749/69. Headings B7H and B7M. A self-powered carriage or trolley for running on an upright wall of magnetizable material, e.g. a ship's hull, and for carrying materials, people or equipment for performing cleaning, painting or welding operations, comprises a frame 10 supporting annular magnets 12 each surrounding a wheel 22 having a resilient tyre for engaging the wall surface, the direction of movement being controlled by rotating the wheel assemblies, e.g. through a range of 120 degrees, by motors 36 with pinions engaging teeth 40 on the wheel carriers 28. Each wheel incorporates a driving motor. Each magnet core 14 has an excitation winding 16, the current to which may be controlled to maintain a constant tractive force. In Fig. 3 (not shown), steel brushes on the inner and outer peripheries of the magnets bridge the air gap to reduce losses due to the air gap, and facilitate movement over uneven surfaces. The frame alternatively may have four wheel assemblies. The carriage may be remote-controlled or automatically guided.
