Abstract

An arrangement for transferring substances between a vessel 1 closed by a cover 11 and a glove box 3 having a flange 2 closed by a cover 8, comprises supporting the vessel by a device 4 so that an annular seal 10 abuts a surface 9 of an inwardly-directed ridge 5 formed on the flange. A rim 12 of the cover 11 also abuts the seal 10 and is held in place by the threaded pin 19 of a coupling part 18 rotatably supported in a bush 32 fixed to the cover, the pin 19 cooperating with a nut 35 fixed to a lower cover 14. Inclined edges 15, 13 of the covers 11, 14 form a conical section groove 16 receiving an endless helical spring 13 under tension whereby when the pin 19 and nut 35 clamp the covers 11, 14 together the spring is forced into a groove 20 in the vessel 1 as shown so that the covers are retained on the vessel. The cover 8 has an annular seal 7 held by a tubular member 24 against a surface 6 of the ridge 5. The member 24 is connected to a lever 25 having a pivot 26 and retained in the clamping position shown by a releasable lug 29. A spindle 22 mounted for rotary and rectilinear motion in the member 24 extends through a packing 30 effecting a gastight seal with the cover 8, an internally threaded member 31 on the end of the spindle co-operating with an external thread on the bush 32 when the spindle is pushed inwards and rotated by a handle 23. At the same time a spring-loaded coupling 33 rotatable with the spindle 22 is connected to the coupling part 18. The parts 31, 32 have a thread of the opposite hand to the thread of the parts 19, 35 so that as the rim 12 is drawn against the seal 7 the lower cover 14 is moved away from the cover 11 and the spring 13 retracts out of the groove 20. The lug 29 is released, the lever 25 moved horizontally a short distance and the pivot 26 moved along a slot 27 so that the covers 8, 11, 14 are withdrawn into the glove box 3.
