Abstract
1,270,055. Isomerisation; hydrogenation. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 30 June, 1970, No. 31539/70. Heading C5E. The octane rating of a C 5 -C 6 gasoline blend stock containing at least 10% unsaturated straight chain hydrocarbons is improved by isomerizing the blend stock to increase the proportion of unsaturated branched chain hydrocarbons and thereafter hydrogenating the product. The isomerization may be effected at 70-800‹ F. and 0-500 p.s.i.g. using as catalyst the oxides, acid-treated oxides or fluorides of Group III or IV elements, e.g. acidified Al 2 O 3 . The hydrogenation may be effected at 70-700‹ F. and 0-1000 p.s.i.g. in the presence of a cobalt molybdate, Ni, Pt, Pd, or Ni-W catalyst supported on Al 2 O 3 or kieselguhr. In the example the blend stock is a mixture of C 5 hydrocarbons.
