Abstract

1,269,894. Making gaskets; profile section forming; coiling. JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP. 10 April, 1970 [10 April, 1969; 7 April, 1970], No. 17034/70. Headings B3A and B3E. [Also in Division F2] In a method of making a spirally wound annular gasket a metal strip 12 is profiled into a V-shaped cross-section by rolls 42, 44, passed through a guide 26; bent to form a ring of required diameter by means of rolls 20, 22 and movable pins 36, 38, 40, the end of the strip being spot welded to itself by welding head 34, and then spirally wound around the thus formed ring together with a packing 16 which is formed into a V-shaped cross-section by rolls 46, 48 before passing through guide 26 to rolls 20, 22. When the required diameter is attained a final length of metal strip is wound on to the ring and welded thereto to form the annular gasket 10. The metal may be stainless steel, titanium, nickel or nickel alloy and the packing may be asbestos, cotton, wool, polyfluoromethylene polymer or copolymer, regenerated cellulose, acetate rayon or glass fibre. The winding is preferably carried out in a horizontal plane and at least one of the profiling rollers of each pair 42 and 44, 46 and 48 are driven at a synchronized speed with roller 20. Roller 22 is mounted on a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 24 and its position can be adjusted as required. The rolls have rubber faced peripheries to avoid damage to the strips.
