Abstract

1,269,809. Jaw crushers; comminuting carbon. LINDEMANN MASCHINENFABRIK G.m.b.H. and SCHWEIZERISCHE ALUMINIUM A.G. 9 June, 1969 [19 Sept., 1968], No. 29115/69. Heading B2A. [Also in Division B5] Carbon is recovered from anode units, 1, Fig. 1, used in aluminium manufacture by stripping at 9 and comminution at 10. The apparatus comprises a pair of clamping devices and a pair of stripping devices which are movable parallel with each other and transversely to the direction of movement of the clamping devices to engage a carbon block carried by a clamped anode spade 4. As described, the anode units 1 are conveyed to the apparatus by a trolley conveyor 22 which comprises a frame 23, rollers 24, rails 25 and a hook 26 to pick up the pin of an anode unit. Each anode 3 is held in position by jaws 29 pivotable on axis 50, Fig. 5 on feed rails 28 and biassed by springs 48. The clamping devices comprise cylinders and pistons 13, 12 which are brought into working position by cylinders 46. The stripper arrangement comprises four vertically-arranged cylinders 14 with piston rods 18, Fig. 3, carrying members 19 and scrapers 20 which clean the surface of the anode spade. The stripped-off carbon blocks are delivered to a crushing chamber 30 having vertical fixed and movable walls or jaws 31, 32 which have working surfaces provided with teeth 34. .37, Fig. 6. The movable crushing jaw 32 is actuated by a ram 33 and the crushing chamber 30 is closed by a door 40 actuated by a cylinder 44. After the carbon remnants have been crushed any iron fragments mixed with them may be removed by a magnet.
