Abstract

1,269,726. Valved stoppers. I. H. S. HAYES. 28 Sept., 1970 [15 July, 1969], No. 35616/69. Heading B8T. The discharge nozzle of a container 1 (Fig. 1) comprises a nozzle member 3 slidably mounted in a tubular guide 8 projecting from a wall 2 of the container. At one end, the nozzle member 3 is provided with a flange 6 on which a compression spring 20 bears, the other end of the spring bearing on a frusto-conical member 9 fixed to the inside of the container. The member 9 is provided with perforations 11 to allow the passage of liquid in the container into the nozzle member 3, an annular diaphragm 12 of rubberized fabric preventing liquid passing between the nozzle member 3 and the guide 8. A vent tube 16 is attached to the nozzle member 3, the latter being sealed by a valve member 17 connected to a stem 18 the other end of which is attached to the member 9 at 19. The container is filled by means of the cap 5, and to empty the contents into a tank, for instance, the container is inverted as shown and a flange 7 on the nozzle member 3 is pressed into engagement with the lip of the tank aperture. Thus the nozzle member 3 moves inwards against the force of the spring 20 and permits the flow of liquid past the valve member 17, the displaced air in the tank passing up the vent tube 16 into the container until the level of liquid in the tank closes the tube 16, whereupon no further liquid flows. In a second embodiment, (Fig. 4, not shown), the discharge nozzle is attached by screwthreads (32) to a tubular member (31) extending from the wall of the container. To fill the container, the discharge nozzle is removed and the liquid enters through the tubular member (31). To remove the contents, the container is inverted and a flange (49) is pressed against the tank aperture, as before. The nozzle member (44) then moves inwardly against the force of the spring (45) to allow the passage of the liquid past the valve member (48). A vent tube (46) is provided.
