Abstract

1,181,203. Reciprocating pumps. DIAMOND INTERNATIONAL CORP. Jan.15, 1968 [Feb. 17, 1967], No. 2149/68. Heading F1A. A hand-actuated liquid dispenser pump, e. g. of plastics material, is secured by a closure cap 30, Fig. 1, to the top of a liquid container (dash lines). During operation, air or vapour enters or leaves the container and pump cylinder C through the plunger rod guide opening 34 formed in a collar 33. When the finger button 24 is released the plunger P is returned by a spring 25 to its raised position wherein skirt portion 45 of plunger piston 10 is sealingly wedged between a conical seating 43 and an enlarged portion 39 of the plunger rod 11. Thus the container and cylinder are effectively sealed from the opening 34. Moreover, a secondary seal is formed between the plunger portion 39 and a downwardly extending sleeve 41. Any liquid in the cylinder space above the piston can return to the container via passage 40 and a spider member 32. A discharge valve 19 is rigidly connected to the plunger rod 11 by a member 47 which is provided with a number of flutes for the passage of liquid therethrough to the spray head 21. On depression of the finger button the plunger rod 11 initially telescopes relatively to the piston 10 and opens the discharge valve 19 against the action of spring 25, whereafter the plunger rod engages a shoulder 46 on the piston and causes the piston to move downwardly. The collar 33 has a sleeve 35 snap-fitted at 36 into a wall 27 preferably integral with the cylinder. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), having a cover (54) over the spray head and the exposed portion of the plunger rod, the shoulder (46<SP>1</SP>) has an upwardly extending sleeve which is telescopically and sealingly received in an annular groove (61) in the bottom of the plunger rod, and the sleeve is flexible so that its sealing engagement with the radially outer side wall of the groove is enhanced by the pressure of discharged liquid in the discharge passage region bounded by the sleeve. Moreover, the sleeve (35<SP>1</SP>) of the collar (33<SP>1</SP>) has a downwardly extending thin flexible sleeve (67) with a radially outwardly extending bead (68) thereon sealingly engaging a cylindrical surface (65) on the wall (27<SP>1</SP>). Further, the discharge valve (19<SP>1</SP>) seats on the side wall of the surrounding frusto-conical recess in the piston (10<SP>1</SP>).
