A display screen 7 is associated with one or more elements 9 of plane polarizing material, which act as analysers for light emitted from one or more light sources 1, which light passes through a movable polarizer screen 6 comprising a plurality of sheets of plane polarizing material carried on an endless translucent band 2, the planes of polarization of the sheets having different orientations. A reflector 10 partly surrounds the source 1 and the housing of the device is treated internally, e.g. with black paint, to absorb stray light. The elements 9 may be divided into contiguous portions having different planes of polarization. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the screen 6 is replaced by cylindrical translucent screens of non-polarizing material carrying polarizing portions (34) alternate lengths of which are polarized in different directions. Each screen surrounds a fluorescent tube (31).
