932,167. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 8, 1961 [Nov. 14, 1960], No. 39060/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1). A low-pressure mercury vapour electricdischarge lamp has associated therewith means for producing within the lamp a magnetic field distributed along the whole or the major part of the discharge path of the lamp such that the orientation of the magnetic field varies cyclically along the length of the discharge path, with the direction of the magnetic lines of force reversed a plurality of times between one end of the discharge path and the other. The magnetic field is preferably produced by a plurality of ferrite elements disposed along the discharge lamp, adjacent elements having opposite polarities. Two rows of elements may be used, either lying adjacent to each other, or with the discharge lamp therebetween. In a specific embodiment, the elements are held by their own magnetism on a steel plate support, and the discharge lamp mounted below them with an aluminium reflector disposed between the lamps and the elements. The direction of the magnetic lines of force may be reversed ten or more times between the ends of the discharge path, and a complete reversal in the direction of the lines of force from one direction to the opposed direction may take place in every four inches or less of the discharge path.
