Abstract
1,268,803. Fused electrolyte production of sodium. TEKKOSHA K.K. July 18, 1969 [July 18, 1968], No.36355/69. Heading C7B. Sodium is produced in a fused electrolyte cell comprising a stationary anode plate 1, having an horizontal or inclined (e.g. conical) upper surface preferably provided with grooves or projections 15, on to which sodium amalgam 8 is delivered from a transport pipe 6, e. g. to drain from the cell through a second transport pipe 9, and a cathode plate 2 disposed above and spaced from the anode upper surface, e.g. by an insulator 3 around the edges of the plates. A fused-salt electrolytic bath 5 of sodium salts, e.g. NaOHNaBr and/or NaI, is placed between the plates 1, 2 and on the latter. Hydrogen may be introduced through pipes 11 into the space between the plates to bubble through the bath. During electrolysis, sodium is deposited on the under surface of the cathode plate 2 to float up through apertures 12 therein and form a molten sodium layer 13 on the bath surface to be collected via pipe 14.
