In a braiding machine strand carrier, a first member 42 on the bobbin spindle is connected to the bobbin for rotation therewith and has an associated spring 72 also associated with a second member which releases the bobbin when the strand tensioning member moves from its strand take up position to its second position and holds the bobbin when the strand tensioning member returns to its take up position. Secured to the usual carrier 12 is a foot member 10 carrying a fixed spindle 15 supporting a rotatable bobbin 16 for single or multiple filament steel wire or the like 17. Supports 20, 21, 22, 25 are mounted on member 10 and held against relative deflection by a bracket 26 secured to their upper ends. From bobbin 16, yarn 17 passes round post 20 and round rotatable grooved rollers 30, 32, 35, 36 carried on a member 31 on foot 10, on a tension member 33 slidable on supports 22 and 25, on member 10 and on bracket 26. Member 33 rests on compression springs 37, 40. Rotatable on spindle 15 is a member 42 with lugs 46 which engage slots 47 in bobbin 16, and a bearing portion 50 carried in a bore 51 in a bracket 52 with slots engaging supports 20, 21. Secured to portion 50 is a bearing portion 57 which embraces a hub 65 on member 10. Bracket 52, portion 57 and hub 65 have outer bearing surfaces 67, 70 and 71, surface 70 having a ridge 75. Torque type coil springs 72, 76 are mounted respectively against the outer surfaces 67 and 70 above ridge 75 and surface 70 below ridge 75 and 71. End 77 of the spring 72 is anchored in a hole 80 in bracket 52 and end 81 of spring 72 engages one of a series of notches 84 in a rotatable sleeve member 82 biassed by spring 83.
