In a drawer type vending machine, rapid adjusting means comprising coin separators 25, packing pieces 35, and coin replacement pieces 34 allow any combination of two coins, or alternatively a single coin, to be accepted in a coin holder 23 adapted both to receive coins on edge in the same plane and to hold said coins in the path of locking means for releasing a drawer. Coins C are received edge to edge in the holder 23 which is mounted on a bar 29. Attempts to open a drawer cause cam 29a to move the bar 29 (and hence the coins) in a plane perpendicular to the planes of the coins so as to move rollers 32 on arms 31 apart, thus releasing pawls 30 from the bar. If no coins, or coins of insufficient diameter, are present in the holder 23, the rollers pass through cut outs in the holder. To adjust the mechanism for different coins, packing pieces 35 may be inserted to accommodate smaller coins (Fig. 7) (not shown). A coin separator 25 is also used to obtain required spacing of coins (Figs. 7 and 12, not shown), and a coin replacement piece (Fig. 12) can be used if only one coin is required for the purchase. Excess coins are diverted via flap (39) (Fig. 1, not shown) and coins can be returned to the customer by pressing a button to remove a coin support 37 (Figs. 7 and 12), the coins falling down a shoot (38) (Fig. I, not shown).
