In order that a vending machine should be capable of use in a confined space it is made of a shallow construction which projects only a small distance away from a surface on which it backs, the coin slot 5 and operating facilities 15, 27 being disposed on one edge of the machine, as shown in Fig. 1, while dispensed goods are delivered to a shoot 22 in the front of the machine. Specifically, the machine vends cigarettes in packs which are stacked on edge and dispensed by sliding the bottom pack laterally out from under the stack. The coin mechanism is shown in Fig. 2 and comprises a dispensing slide 12 mounted in guides 13, 14 with a post 23 at one end for raking the bottom packet from the stack. Slide 12 is reciprocated by the operating bar 15 acting on bell crank 18. The full limits of reciprocation being demanded by pawl 20 and ratchet 21. Slide 12 is locked by a bolt 10 sliding vertically alongside a coin shoot 7 and carrying a pivoted release plate 9. Coins falling into shoot 7 are stopped on a plate 8, the second coin resting on the first and lying beneath the part of the release plate 9 that projects into the coin shoot 7. With two coins in position a small initial movement of the slide causes them to lift the bolt 10 out of the recess 11 in slide 12 which is consequently freed, the coins being discharged to a coin box. The push-button 27 working levers 24 and 26 is said to reject unsuitable coins to the delivery shoot 22.
