Abstract

1,267,933. Kites. P. T. POWELL 30 July, 1970 [22 May, 1969], No. 26048/69. Heading B7W. A kite comprises a sail 10, preferably of plastics sheeting, supported by pockets 13 on a framework comprising a back-bone spar 1, 2 and a cross spar made in two overlapping halves 4, 5 hinged together and to the backbone spar at their mutual point of intersection. The sail is apertured as at 14 or 21 so that the overlapping parts of the cross spar may pass therethrough with the extremity of one part secured to the other overlapped arm by springs or elastic cords 9. A loop 17, for the attachment of tethering line 15, includes an elastic element 18. By this construction the element 18 enables the kite to change its inclination in flight in accordance with the forces acting upon it and the construction of cross-spar enables the sail to assume a transverse curvature which also varies with the loading.
