Abstract

1,267,779. Olefin polymers. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 19 May, 1970 [26 June, 1969], No. 24078/70. Heading C3P. Resinous polymers comprising 40 to 80 weight per cent piperylene units and 60 to 40 weight 2-methylbutene-2 units and having a softening point of at least 85‹ C., the unsaturation level of which has been reduced by hydrogenation to 40 to 85% of that of the starting polymer, may be prepared by copolymerizing a mixture of 20 to 75 weight per cent piperylene and 80 to 25 weight per cent 2-methylbutene-2 in the presence of an anhydrous halide catalyst and hydrogenating the product at 20‹ to 300‹ C. in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. In a modification the polymerization mixture may further comprise up to 50 weight per cent of piperylene dimers or trimers or other C 4-6 hydrocarbons to give products containing up to 25% of units thereof. Specified hydrocarbons are 2 - methylbutene - 1, 2,3 - dimethylbutene-1, 2,3 - dimethylbutene - 1, 3,3 - didimethylbutene-1, pentene-1, pentene-2, 2- methylpentene - 1, 2 - methylpentene - 2, 3- methylpentene - 2, 4 - methylpentene - 1, 4- methylpentene-2, hexene-2, isoprene, cyclopentene, cyclohexene and 1,3-cyclopentadiene. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of a halide of aluminium, tin or boron, and hydrogenation in the presence of nickel, palladium, platinum, cobalt, osmium, rhenium, ruthenium, nickel sulphides, nickel oxide, copper chromite, cobalt/molybdenum, chromium, molybdenum oxide, molybdenum sulphide, platinum oxide, cobalt oxide, rhenium oxide, ruthenium oxide, sponge iron, iron oxide, sponge zinc or zinc oxide, preferably supported on a particulate substrate. The products are useful as tackifiers in rubber-based and hotmelt adhesives.
