Abstract

In a foam generating system for an airfield crash tender the pump 1 has a recirclation conduit 30, 32 from its output pipe 9 to its inlet pipe 2, in which is a venturi indicator 31 for foam compound from tank 33. Each hand foam generator 20 (as shown, there can be four) is supplied through a pipe having a flow sensor 21 of the orifice type producing a pressure drop, and downstream thereof is a feedback pipe as at 24, 27 to the induction inlet of the inductor 31, in which is a constant flow valve 28 and a pressure relief valve 29. So long as there is flow from the generator 20 pressure downstream of the orifice 21 is insufficient to open the valve 29, but if the valve 22 be closed, pressure in the feedback pipe rises, the valve 29 opens and liquid flows back to the inductor at a rate controlled by the valve 28 to replace that amount of foam compound which was formerly supplied to the generator 20, so that there is no increase in the proportion of compound in the liquid supplied to the other generators. A foam monitor 38 is supplied from an inductor 42 connected in a separate recirculation pipe circuit 39, 41, 44. In a modification, see Fig. 2 (not shown) the inductor is supplied through an adjustable foam compound/water blending valve (47), which enables the proportions to be adjusted. In an alternative modification (see Fig. 3, not shown) there is a bleed pipe (54) from the pump outlet pipe 9 to the inductor inlet and which is a main bleed valve (55) which is adjustable. The volume of liquid required to be fed back to the inductor from a shut-down generator will vary inversely with the opening of the valve (55), and the feed back pipes are therefore provided instead of the constant flow valves 28, with adjustable valves (56) which may be interconnected with the main bleed valve (55) to operate in a complementary sense thereto.
