Abstract

1,267,039. Buckles. J. R. COYLE. 29 July, 1969 [19 Feb 2 1969], No. 38084/69. Heading E2A. A canopy buckle is releasable by hand or by the action of an explosive charge 72a on a piston 72b serving to move a cam-plates 70, 80 to the releasing position. A male element 2, 7 is retained in a female body part 1 by means of a sliding latch-bolt 9 which is retained by a cover plate 21 and loaded to the fastening position by a spring 23. The bolt 9 may be moved rearwardly by manual means 10 or automatic means 11. In order to effect manual release, plates 30, 40 at the top of the buckle must be slid by manual pressure on finger-plates 30a, 30b, in opposite directions so that pins 31, 31 leave notches 51a and pins 41, 41 similarly leave notches 51b, (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown). Interengaging lugs 32, 42 prevent motion of one plate only. Springs 64, 65 on pins 61 bias the plates into the engaging position. When the plates have been manually displaced so that their pins lie in slots 51 in the cover-plate, they may be drawn rearwardly, together with bolt 9 to free the male member 7 and release the buckle. When the explosive is moved to automatically release the buckle, movement of either of the cam-plates 70, 80 causes cam-surfaces 71a, 81a to engage projections 31a, 41a on the platepins 31, 41 to move them to the releasing position and retract the bolt 9. The charge 72a is fired by an electrically triggered cap 72c. The piston carries a circlip 72g which snaps into a groove 72h on firing, to prevent refastening of the buckle. In a modification, (Figs. 11-16, not shown) either of two charges will move a single cam-plate (170) having a pair of cam-surfaces (171a, 171b) which serve to move both slideable locking plates (130, 140) simultaneously.
