[Also in Divisions B3 and F2] A system for reducing a mixture of swarf and sawn-off bar ends uses two or more spaced drums including retractable pegs, and driven at different speeds. As described, a pair of contra-rotating drums is arranged with centres in a common plane at 45‹ to a base, each drum bearing spring- loaded pegs 11. The upper drum runs more slowly than the lower drum. An adjustable cam plate 12 controls the motion of the pegs which are retracted for 270‹ of each revolution. Loose swarf and cut off metal bars are separated (by a separator, not shown) and the swarf in the form of a mat is fed to a second pair of drums which form a shredder. In each case, the top drum and its drive unit are mounted on a frame having wheels 13 and provided with a balance weight 19 and stop 15. This permits the drum to yield when tramp or awkwardly placed material gets between the drums. Each drum is driven by a spur gear and pinion and a variable-speed motor, and a slipping clutch 4 safeguards the hardened pegs 11.
