Abstract
1,266,657. Coating process. C. T. Mc- ELROY. 12 June, 1970, No. 28549/70. Headings B2E and B2L. A process for coating a surface of a cellulosic panel, especially a plywood panel, consists in applying to the surface a resinous chemical coating free of combustible solvents and suspended or dissolved in water while the panel is in constant linear movement, directly impinging an open flame upon the coating to boil off some of the water vehicle and singe some of the surface filaments, flattening the partly dried coating under pressure usually by means of rollers, repeating the flame impingement and flattening operations and then repeating these operations again, the third open flame being at approximately 1400F and the first and second flames usually alsobeing at this temperature. The coating may be a polyvinyl acetate emulsion, vinyl acetate copolymer latex or solution, vinyl acrylic copolymer latex, a water-miscible alkyd resin, water-soluble lacquer or urea-formaldehyde resin, a hydrosol system or aqueous thermosetting polymer solution. If thermosetting polymer is used, two or more additional flame and flattening stages may be used to effect curing. Apparatus for effecting the process comprises driven support rollers for the panel 17, a rubber applicator roller 16 in contact with a knurled doctor roller 15 for applying the coating. a burner 19 to provide the open flame, a polished steel smoothing roller 21 which is heated to 550-600F, and further burners 19a &c. and smoothing rollers 21a &c. The smoothing rollers may rotate at a speed less than the linear speed of the panel to minimise collection of the coating material on the roller.
