Abstract

An aq. cast coating substance for paper contains, per 100 pts. solids, >=60 pts. of pigment and 40 pts. of binding agent; of this binding agent, 40-100% comprises a polymer having a setting temp. (TG) or vitreous transition temp. of 0-45 degrees C on d a difference between this and the film-forming temp. (Tg-Tf) of 5-25 degrees C; this polymer is in the form of a latex having an average particle size less than 0.5 (0.3) micron. The pH value is pref. >7. Esp. a vinyl ester of a carbonic acid and also a butadiene-methyl methacrylate-copolymer and/or styrene- acryl-copolymer, may be used by comparison with the previously known gel application process, a tough, porous coating is obtd. which can be applied at a higher speed.
