Abstract

1,266,556. Wells &c. CAMERON IRON WORKS Inc. 8 Aug., 1969 [4 Oct., 1968], No. 39895/69. Heading E1F. A blowout preventer comprises a housing 21, and an annulus 33 of deformable material having rigid inserts 41. Each insert has flanges 43 and a web 42, the sides of the web lying in planes of least strain in the material as the annulus is radially constricted. As shown slots extend between the flanges of adjacent inserts and the annulus has annular projections 44 radially outside of the flanges. In modifications the flanges extend to the outer edges of the annulus and the projections extend over the flanges. The annulus is constricted by segments 36 carried by radial pistons 63. Passages 39 permit well pressure to act on the outer side of the annulus.
