Abstract

[Also in Division G1] A safety control device, used to activate a switch to cut off the heating means in a boiler when the water in the boiler sinks to an undesirable level, comprises a motal-cored probe 1 provided with insulation 2 and supported in a housing 3; and a calming chamber 4 at the lower end of the housing 3 having an orifice 14 in communication with the boiler. When the device is fitted to a ships' boiler, the dimensions of the orifice 14 will be such that during the pitching or rolling cycle of the ship water will flow through the orifice but will not sink below the safe water level 15 when there is sufficient water in the boiler for safe operation, the outflow from the chamber 4 being sufficiently delayed. When the water in the boiler sinks below the safe level 15 and thus below the tip 17 of the probe 1, the resistance in the closed electrical circuit, (only connectors 5 and 6 being shown), will rise and activate a heating control switch to cause it to move to the off position.
