Abstract
1,265,708. Boring earth and rock. GEORGE WIMPEY & CO. Ltd. 9 Oct., 1970 [14 Oct., 1969], No. 50443/69. Heading E1F. A portion 31 of a borehole wall is reinforced by introducing frangible containers 32 (which collectively or individually hold reactants settable on mixing into a firm mass) through a drilling apparatus 11 into the bottom of the borehole, breaking the containers with the drill bit, raising the latter out of the mix before it sets, and drilling through the firm mass. A packer may be set above the portion 31 and pressure applied to the mix to force it into crevices &c. before it sets. In one form, Fig. 1, the containers are stored in a tube 26 having an inspection glass 30 and are released into a fluid (air or water) stream in a conduit 24 by opening a plug valve 25. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), containers holding one or other of the reactants are stored in separate tubes. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the containers are stored in a bypass tube of the conduit 24 and are flushed into the fluid stream by diverting the flow through the bypass. The containers may be of polymethylmethacrylate or polystyrene, and the reactants are based on epoxy resins, formaldehyde resins, polyesters or inorganic silicate solutions which are hardened by suitable additives specified in the description.
