Abstract

1,255,128. Core sampling. LABORATORIO NACIONAL DE ENGENHARIA CIVIL. 6 July, 1970 [24 July, 1969], No. 32542/70. Heading E1] A method of core sampling comprises inserting a reinforcing member into the rock or soil to be sampled, binding the member to the rock or soil surrounding it and taking a core sample consisting of the member and the rock or soil bound thereto. A hole is drilled from the surface, or from the bottom of a larger diameter hole by means of a drill string having a flange to engage a centring sleeve in the bigger hole. The reinforcing member which may be a steel or plastics bar is inserted into the hole by means of a releaseable coupling head connected to a string of rods. The member pushes cement grout or a plastics binding material already in the hole into the surrounding rock. Alternatively the binding material may be introduced through a bore in the bar after the bar has been inserted. A hole concentric with the bar is then drilled around it and the sample removed.
