Abstract

Heading C2C. Novel ketones of the formula in which m is 1 or 2, B is a carboxy, C 1-7 alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxyoarbonyl, C 1-7 alkylsulphinyl or C 1-7 alkylsulphonyl group, Z represents a carbonyl, a C 1-7 alkylenedioxymethylene or >CH(0R 2 ) group (where R 2 is hydrogen, C 1-7 alkyl, C 1-7 alkoxy-C 1-7 alkyl; phenyl-C 1-7 -alkyl, tetrahydropyranyl, C 1-6 alkanoyl, benzoyl, nitrobenzoyl, carboxy-C 1-7 -alkyl, carboxy-benzoyl, trifluoroacetyl or camphorsulphonyl), R 4 is hydrogen or C 1-7 alkyl, R 1 is hydrogen, C 1-7 alkyl or a group of the formulµ (where R 7 is C 1-7 alkyl, R 15 is an oxo, C 1-7 alkylenedioxy, arylenedioxy or a hydrogen atom and a C 1-7 alkoxy group, R 25 and R 26 are hydrogen, hydroxy or C 1-7 alkyl; R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or C 1-7 alkyl and R<SP>11</SP> is hydrogen, C 1-7 alkyl, C 1-7 alkylaryl or aralkyl) and the alkali metal salts of the free acids, are prepared by reacting in an inert solvent and in the absence of oxygen, a compound of the formula in which X is a leaving group; with a ketone of the Formula III in the presence of a base sufficiently strong to form the conjugate anion of ketone III, e.g. an alkali metal alkoxide. Specified leaving groups, X, are sulphonyloxy, acyloxy, halogeno and amino groups, tosyloxy and mesyloxy being preferred. Examples describe the preparation of 2 - (1# - t - butoxy - 3aα,4#,5,6,7,7a - hexahydro- 7a# - methyl - 5 - oxo - 4 - indanylmethyl). derivatives of 3-oxovaleric acid ethyl ester, 6- (2 - methyl - 1,3 - dioxolan - 2 - yl) - 3 - oxo hexanoic acid ethyl ester, 5 - [(3,5 - dimethylisoxazol - 2 - yl)methyl] - 3 - oxopentanoic acid ethyl ester and 5-(7,7-o-phenylenedioxy)-3-oxooctanoic acid ethyl ester.
