[Also in Divisions A3, B5 and C3] A plastics-containing leather substitute is prepared by applying to a substrate a mixture of a polymeric binder and a pulverulent filler selected from natural leathers and collagencontaining leather substitutes and having a particle size of 0.001 to 0.2mm, the mixture being in the form of a dispersion, emulsion or solution containing water or a solvent for the binder and the amount of said filler being from 5 to 60% by weight of the total solids in the mixture. In an example, split leather is coated with an aqueous dispersion containing n-butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate copolymer, casein grafted with ethyl acrylate and buffing powder produced in the manufacture of chrome tanned leather and dried. A semianiline finish polyurethane varnish is applied to the coated leather, which may be embossed after leather finishing.
