Abstract

1404194 Coated flexible sheet materials ROHM & HAAS CO 3 July 1972 [6 July 1971] 30995/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Leather or leather substitute is coated by applying thereto a coating composition, which comprises a copolymer of a monomer charge containing 0.5 to 5% by weight (based on the total weight of monomers) of acrolein, 1 to 25% by weight (based on the total weight of monomers) one or more α, #-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and the balance of the monomer charge being composed of one or more other ethylenically unsaturated compounds copolymerisable therewith, the amount of copolymer applied being from 1 to 5 pounds per thousand square feet of leather or leather substitute, and drying, or allowing to dry, the thus coated leather or leather substitute. In the examples the coating compositions comprise the polymers, water, levelling agent, embossing release aid, non film forming dulling agents, carbon black pigment, aqueous ammonia and diethylene triamine. In example 5 three such base coats are applied, followed by a cross-coat of water cut lacquer emulsion plating coat comprising clear plasticised cellulose lacquer, water, dulling agent, black pigment and resinous binders in aqueous dispersion and non-aqueous emulsion, followed by a cross coat of nitrocellulose top coat comprising plasticised nitrocellulose lacquer, thinner, black pigment and dulling agent.
