Abstract
1,264,942. Raising sunken ships. CYCLO MFG. CO., and J. D. HELBIG. 20 March, 1970 [1 April, 1969], No. 13725/70. Heading B7S. Apparatus for raising sunken ships comprises a pressurized air chamber 10 receiving buoyant hollow elements 13 from a hopper, each element having a small aperture permitting throughflow of air but not water, the air pressure in the elements being raised in the chamber to approximately the water pressure in the sunken ship, and the elements falling from the chamber 10, via slide valve 11, into a pipe 15 having a motor-driven belt 17 for moving the elements downwardly to the ship 12 via pipe 21. In the embodiment shown, air vents 18 are provided in pipe 15, and a water jet from pipe 23 assists the movement of elements 13 through pipe 21, a weight 22 holding the pipes in the required position. In Fig. 2 (not shown), coupling 20 and pipes 21 and 23 are omitted, and the lower end of pipe 15 is bent upwardly and passes directly into the sunken ship, belt 17 being seated at the pipe bend. In Fig. 3 (not shown), pipe 15 extends straight down into the sunken ship and has belt 17 and air vents 18 at its lower end. A pivotally movable finger may replace belt 17.
