Abstract
1,264,700. Cigarettes. L. M. RIEGEL and S. B. WHITE. 27 Oct., 1969 [28 Oct., 1968], No. 52470/69. Heading A2C. A cigarette includes a sleeve 11 and a cylinder (20) containing tobacco, a first control element 17 rigidly mounted at one end of, and of substantially the same diameter as that of, the cylinder (20), the sleeve 11 fitting over said one end of the cylinder (20) and being rotationally and axially movable thereon, and a second control element 12 rigidly mounted in the sleeve 11, the elements 12, 17 having complementary perforations 15, 18 therein which are arranged in coincidence or occlusion upon rotation of the sleeve 11. Preferably the cylinder (20) includes a filter tip 16 and aeration perforations 19, the sleeve 11 having complementary aeration perforations 13. The relative rotational and axial positions of the elements 12, 17 determine their damping action on the smoke flow from the cigarette when drawn, and the relative positions of the perforations 13, 19 determine the degree of aeration of the smoke. Other forms of control elements disclosed are a pair of elements 30, 31, Fig. 7, provided with arcuate sector openings 34, 35 and, Fig. 8 (not shown), a nested pair of cone shaped elements (40, 41) containing perforations (42, 43) throughout alternate segments. In another embodiment, Fig. 10A (not shown), V-shaped notches (54, 58) formed in the circumference of control elements (52, 56) and axially aligned with aeration perforations (51, 57) respectively, provide means for effecting a controlled air bypass irrespective of the axial position of the sleeve (50). The elements 30, 31 and (42, 43) may be modified to produce the same kind of control. In a further embodiment, Fig. 13B, in which the aeration air does not pass through any of the smoke control elements, a sleeve 80 includes an inner cylinder 82, two sets of air perforations 83, 84 in coincidence, and a control element 86. Additionally the cigarette 90 is provided with a cylindrical tip portion (91) containing air perforations 92 and a control element 93.
