lated with respect to the casing.
aperture 10 and co-operating With the side walls defining the circumferential limits of said aperture to prevent said disc from revolving with respect to the surrounding valve-casing.
A cap is provided for said valve-casing and the contents thereof, said valve comprising a preferably slightly concaved central portion 16, surrounded by a substantially cylindrical portion 17, Which may be provided upon its outer surface with suitable knurling 18 if desired, said cylindrical portion slidably engaging and being rotatable about the outer surface of the cylindrical portion 9 of the valve-casing and at its marginal portion being turned radially inwardly to provide a iiange 19 embracing a portion of the rear surface of the plane section 8 of said casing.
rl`he flange portion 19 is out aivay at 2 the laterally opposite sides of which cutaway portion co-operate in turn 'with the opposite sides of the lug 11 for limiting the movement of the cap as the same is oscil- Said cap is furthermore provided With spaced apertures 21, which, When positioned as shown in Fig. 3, coincide With the apertures 14 in the disc 13, and offer a relatively free passage for air through said aligned apertures by Way of the gasket 12 and thence through the apertures 7 in the neck portion 6 of the valve-casing, towards and into the bore 5 of the pipestem, Where the cool fresh air lunites with the relatively hot smoke and gases of combustion from the tobacco being consumed Within the bowl 1, and pass to- Wards and through the mouth portion 3 of the pipe.
If it is desired to shut ofi the supply of fresh air through the valve structure, the cap is oscillated so that the apertures 21 and 14 are out of alignment, thereby making it possible to smoke With the pipe equipped with the improved valve exactly as though there were no valve carried by the pipe, and the usual hot smoke is received in the mouth of the smoker. Obviously then, it is possible to oscillate the cap but a relatively short distance as shown in Fig. 6, wherein the apertures 21 and 111 are but partially in alignment and permit a varying degree of cool fresh air to enter the pipestem between the Zero and maximum limits before referred to.
1t will also be noted that this valve structure is so positioned upon the pipe-stem that for either a right or left handed person a finger or thumb can Without awkwardness, but in a purely natural manner, be placed over the valveicap, and the latter being concaved to it the curvature of ones finger, the same Will conveniently rest in that position, with the result that when the valve is either .completely or partially opened, said linger or thumb may be userL to manually obstruct the openings 21, and in effect more nearly or entirely close the valve intermittently, or as often and to the exact extent as may be desired Without necessitating alteration of the valve-cap With respect to the casing.
it will also be noted from the structure herein described and illustrated that an airtight valve has been provided, whereby air can bypass into the pipe or cigarette-holder stem only through the combined apertures 14 and 21, and not around the periphery of the cap, thus providing` a positive control for the air, either by positioning the valve cap as desired or by manually obstructingl the valve openings to a greater or less degree as before described.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to protect by Letters Patentof the United States is 1. A hollow valve casing having a neck, an annular gasket Within the said casing, a perforated disc also Within the said casing and seated against said gasket, and a per- Iforated cap covering the open end of the said casing and embracing the periphery thereof, said cap being oscillatable so that the two sets of perforations register or variably close each other to alter the passage of air through said valve.
2. A valve comprising an apertured neck portion, a plane portion formed integrally With said neck portion, said plane portion terminating radially in a cylindrical portion, an annular gasket fitted Within said cylindrical portion and against said plane portion, a perforated disc resting against said gasket, and a perforated cap having a peripheral flange encircling the cylindrical portion of the casing and oscillatable with respect thereto.
, 3. A valve comprising an apertured neck portion, a plane portion formed integrally with said neck portion, said plane portion terminating radially in a cylindrical portion, an annular gasket fitted Within said cylindrical portion and against said plane portion, a perforated disc resting against said gasket, a perforated cap having a peripheral flange encircling the cylindrical portion of the casing and oscillatable with respect thereto, and a radial extension carried by said dise engaging the sides of a recess in the cylindrical portion of the casing, to prevent movement of the disc with respect to said casing.
el. A valve comprising an apertured neck portion, a plane portion formed integrally with said neck portion, said plane portion terminating radially in a cylindrical portion, an annular gasket fitted Within said cylindrical portion and against said plane portion, a perforated disc resting against said gasket, a perforated cap having a peripheral rflange encircling the cylindrical llO portion of the casing and oscillatable With respect thereto, a section oi said cylindrical portion having a recess, and a lug being formed on said plane portion in alignment with the recess, a radial extension carried by said disc and extending into said recess to prevent movement of the disc with respect to the casing, the marginal portion oi the cap being iianged around the rear of said plane portion and also having a recess, said lug extending into the recess ot the flange 4and engaging the same to predetermine the limit of oscillation of said cap.
5. A valve, adapted for use to bypass air into the conduit of a smokers pipe, and comprising a hollow casing, having a body portion surrounded by a cylindrical portion and having a recess, an apertnred disc inA and a lug carried by said body portion and extending into the recess 'of the cap to predetermine the limit of oscillation of said cap.
in testimony whereof have affixed my signature.
