Abstract
1,264,651. Phosphoric acid. TENNESSEE CORP. 14 Feb., 1969 [16 Feb., 1968; 29 April, 1968 (2); 31 July, 1968 (2)], No. 8288/69. Heading C1A. Phosphoric acid is produced by (a) treating phosphate rock with nitric acid to produce a mixture of nitric and phosphoric acids and then precipitating calcium nitrate from the acidulate, (b) removing the precipitate and (c) contacting the acid mixture with a gas containing nitric oxide so as to react with the nitric acid to give nitrogen dioxide, which is removed, thereby reducing the nitrate content of the resulting solution. In step (a) the calcium nitrate is precipitated by treating the crude acidulate with highly concentrated nitric acid, or with nitrogen dioxide and oxygen under pressure, to reduce its water content, preferably to below 14 wt. per cent. In a preferred procedure, the calcium nitrate separated from the acidulation vessel 25 is decomposed in a fluidized bed reactor 1 at above 650 C. to give nitrous gases which may be used to supply the nitric oxide used in step (c). Part of this decomposition gas may also be used to supply nitrogen dioxide via line 24 for use in precipitating the calcium nitrate or may be reacted with oxygen and water in autoclave 10 to provide nitric acid, e.g. for use in the acidulation or in the precipitation. Heat is supplied to the reactor 1 by recycling a part of the product line and reheating it in fluidized bed vessel 17. Part of the decomposition gas may be recycled via line 7 to act as the fluidization gas.
