Abstract

1,264,445. Adjustable headlamps. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. 23 Nov., 1970 [22 Nov., 1969], No. 55539/70. Heading F4R. Apparatus for adjusting the inclination of the beam of a motor vehicle headlamp comprises a switch for transmitting electrical impulses to an electromagnet to cause displacement of an adjusting device extending between the fixed and moving parts of the lamp. The switch, Fig. 1, fitted to the vehicle dashboard comprises a ratchet-wheel 2 which is turned by a handle operated by the driver to displace a pin 3 against a spring 4 to make contacts 6, 7 which close the circuit to the electromagnet. The adjusting device, Fig. 3, comprises a ratchetwheel 12 operated by a dog activated by the electromagnet in response to the switch, this ratchet-wheel having an eccentrically located pin 13 which on rotation of the wheel drives a lever 16. As the body of the adjusting device is attached to the lamp reflector 18 and the lever 16 is attached via pin 20 to the body of the vehicle, this movement causes tilting of the reflector with consequent adjustment of the beam inclination. Initial adjustment is made using bolt 21 between lever 16 and the vehicle body. To provide a quick return mechanism, restoring the reflector rapidly to its original undeflected position, trip cams 22 are provided around half of the ratchet-wheel 12, these cams operating switch contacts on rotation of the wheel to cause automatic stepping of the electromagnet and ratchet-wheel over the arc covered by the trip cams, this arc corresponding to positions of the reflector between fully deflected and original positions.
