Abstract
1,263,998. Mixing apparatus. LUWA A.G. 21 March, 1969 [25 March, 1968], No. 15024/ 69. Heading B1C. [Also in Division F4] Flowable materials (unspecified) are distributed as a thin film over a heated or cooled wall surface by a spreader member which moves relatively to the wall surface. As shown, a plurality of spreader members 36 are axially spaced (either uniformly or not) along a shaft 38 which is reciprocated axially so that the spreader members pass over the inner surface of a shell 12. The flowable material enters the shell through an inlet 20 and ports 24, and flows downwardly as a film over the wall 12 to an outlet 26. The action of the spreader members on the film as they reciprocate across the wall as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The wall is heated or cooled by a fluid circulated through a surrounding jacket 14. A rotary motion may be superimposed upon the reciprocating motion of the spreaders and this is said to improve the distribution of the flowable material. The spreader elements 36, as shown, comprises rings which when heating of the flowing material is involved, permit the escape of vapour to an outlet 28 at the top of the shell. A modified spreader is described (Fig. 6) which accelerates the escape of vapour from the surface of the film and also removes any entrained droplets in the vapour. The spreader rings may be such that in one direction of their reciprocating motion they scrape the film from the surface. Another form is described (Figs. 7-10) in which the film runs over the outer surface of a cylindrical member (88) through which passes the heating or cooling fluid. The spreaders are reciprocated over the cylindrical surface and incorporate means to separate droplets from the vapours generated in the flowing film and to guide the vapours towards the wall of a surrounding casing where they may be condensed by a cooling coil (120) and guided back into the film. The spreaders may be stationary, the relative motion being applied to the wall.
