Abstract
1312414 Evaporators; mixing apparatus; vibratory mills H GUJER 3 May 1971 [1 May 1970] T2824/71 Headings B1B B1C and B2A [Also in Divisions B8 F2 and F4] A device for concentrating or heating or cooling liquids containing solids or for drying or heating or cooling bulk solids, comprising at least one tubular chamber in which material is heated or cooled, at least one helical member freely disposed in the chamber with radial spacing, and driving means for moving the or each chamber axis in a closed path so that the or each helical member is rolled around the wall of the chamber to clean the wall and convey the material along the chamber. In Figs. 1 and 2 heating or cooling medium is fed to and from a space 3 between tubes 1 and 2 by means of flexible tubes 4. The inner tube 2 contains a single helical member 5 and is fed with material at 10. The tubes 1 and 2 are supported by eccentrics 9 mounted on motor-driven shafts 6 provided with counterweights 11. Crusher bars 39 are fitted to the helical member 5 to prevent formation of globules. A further heated tube may be fitted coaxially within the tube 2, and an additional helical member of smaller diameter may be arranged to revolve around the outer surface of the further tube. In Fig. 4, an assembly of tubes 13 containing helical members 57 is put into circular motion in a duct 18 supplied with hot air. The material is fed in at 60 and passes successively along each tube 13 to discharge at 62. In another embodiment, the material is pumped into an upper drier chamber containing a helical member and passes from the chamber via a metering unit into a lower drier, the upper drier operating above, and the lower drier at, atmospheric pressure. Drying medium is circulated in a closed system to a jacket around the upper drier chamber. The steam produced in the upper drier passes to the jacket of the lower drier, and the steam and condensate from the lower drier passes to the jacket of a preheater chamber (containing a helical member) through which the material is pumped prior to entry into the upper drier chamber. Upper and lower dryers and the preheater are together put into circular motion. In other embodiments, the helical member is pivotally connected to a roller engaging the inner wall of the drying chamber and having a different diameter from the helical member; the helical member is in two sections of different diameter and pivotally joined together; and the helical member varies in diameter along its length.
