Abstract

1,152,657. Drying web material. DOW CHEMICAL Ltd. 27 Oct.; 1966 [28 Oct.; 1965], No. 48275/66. Heading F4G. [Also in Division D1] Volatile liquid is removed from sheet or web material by heating in a vapour zone which is. substantially air-free and containing vapour of a solvent having a molecular weight at least twice that of air, the heating being at a temperature above whichever is the greater of the boiling point of (a) the volatile liquid or (b) the solvent. The volatile liquid and solvent may comprise the same liquid or the solvent may comprise a halogenated hydrocarbon. In one embodiment the web 48 passes from an inlet 31 to an outlet 32 of a housing comprising heated guide rollers 40 . . . 45 in a vapour zone 49a, the upper limit of which is delineated by the horizontal plane passing through a cooling coil 34 which condenses the vapour created in a lower, boiling sump 35 which is used to create a substantially air-free atmosphere in the zone 49a. The web passes through a bath of treating agent in a solvent 49 e.g. an organic polymeric agent dissolved in a volatile organic solvent via rollers 38, 39, within the chamber but this treatment may occur outside the chamber. The cooling coil may be additional to a cooling jacket integral with the walls of the housing, and a second zone may be formed above the vapour zone which is substantially solvent vapour free and which may contain additional heating elements e.g. infra-red heaters, which heaters may also be. positioned in the vapour zone.
