Abstract
1,263,692. Phosphoric acid from phosphate rock. MARCHON PRODUCTS Ltd. 11 April, 1969 [12 Feb., 1968], No. 6893/68. Heading C1A. Phosphoric acid in admixture with an alkali metal or ammonium phosphate -is produced by treating phosphate rock with sulphuric acid and an alkali metal or ammonium "compound" wherein the stability of the reaction system is enhanced by the addition of "reactive silica" to the system. The "compound" may be the sulphate or a compound which upon reaction with sulphuric acid yields the sulphate and water or volatile products only. "Reactive silica" is a material which readily forms a colloidal silica solution in acid. The P 2 O 5 content of the liquid phase is preferably maintained below 30% by weight, and the SO 3 content thereof between 25 and 30 g./l. The "reactive silica" may comprise 0À25-1% by weight based on phosphate rock and may be silica gel, diatomaceous earth, hydrolysis products of fluorosilicates, or calcium silicate. The compound may be a hydroxide or carbonate. When the "compound" is the sulphate it preferably accounts for 7-11% of the sulphate ions present. In this context, "stability" refers to the production of filterable gypsum crystals in a constant range of crystal sizes and shapes and in which the phosphate rock is substantially completely dissolved.
