Abstract

1,263,629. Rotary kilns. F. L. SMIDTH & CO., A.S. 30 June, 1970 [1 July, 1969], No. 33129/69. Heading F4B. The material inlet end of a kiln for heating material in counter-current to the gas flow is divided into compartments 18 by partitions 17 having gas passages of restricted cross-section - so that the gas flow is accelerated in passing from one compartment to the next, and decreases within the compartments. Lifters 19 on the material inlet side of each partition increase the movement of the material. The gas passages in the partitions may be central holes, or a number of holes arranged to leave an annular skirt, and the total area of the gas passages through each partition is less than one-quarter of the cross-sectional area of the kiln. The lifters may be joined by an annular ring to form pockets. Fines are extracted from the gas flowing from the kiln in a single cyclone separator 6, and electrostatic precipitators 8, and returned to the feed-pipe 11 for the raw material. The weight of returned material is at least half that of the fresh material.
