Abstract

1,263,503. Gas filters. GREEN BAY RESEARCH CORP. 21 Feb., 1969, No. 9582/69. Heading BIT. [Also in Division F1] The passage of gases from the crankcase of an i.c. engine through a filter 13 (via inlet 2 and outlet 5) to the air inlet manifold of the engine is controlled by valves 31, 33 arranged in series. The valves comprise balls adjustably loaded by springs 34, 35, and when the engine develops power, the pressure differential lifts ball 31 from its seating 30 and lifts ball 33 to allow the gases to pass through apertures 41 into chamber 20, from where they pass through passages 19 and 17 to the outlet 5. The springs 34, 35 yield further to allow the ball 33 to uncover further sets of apertures 41 when they are heated by the gases. Gas flow from the crankcase is restricted under highvacuum conditions by the seating of the ball 31 against an interrupted shoulder 32. As shown, an additional spring-loaded ball valve 25 is provided to allow the passage of gases even under idling conditions when the pressure differential is low. Drain valves 45, 46 open automatically when the engine is stopped, and a drain plug 44 is provided for the passages 17, 19.
