Abstract

[Also in Division B5] A vibratory feeder for use with a chipper for reducing scrap lumber to chips the chipper 22 having an infeed spout 21 and an anvil, a trough 1 having a discharge end 20 adapted to extend into the spout and overlie the anvil, resilient means stressed in a low spring rate direction supporting the trough for vibration in a vertical plane and stressed in a high spring rate when resisting lateral forces supplied to the trough, means for guiding the trough along an inclined path in the plane of vibration, and drive means for reciprocating the trough along the inclined path. The trough is supported from a base 2 by pairs of rocker arms 3 and shear spring assemblies 4, each consisting of a plate 46 disposed between a pair of rubber bushes clamped to plates 47. The trough is vibrated by an eccentric shaft 5 which is driven from a motor 6 and has a connecting rod 8 connected to a lever 9 pivoted to a bracket 10 and shock absorber 11 on the trough. The trough is divided into a loading section 12, a screening section having a perforated base, and a non- metallic section 16 provided with a detector 17 arranged to stop the conveyer if a metallic object is detected. The discharge end 20 of the trough is resiliently connected at 31 to the trough and extends into the infeed spout 21 which is adjacent the anvil 27 of the chipper which is substantially vertical and has an arcuate portion 28. The chipper is provided with rotatable disc 24 having knives 26 inclined to the radius of the disc.
