Abstract

1,262,461. Opening containers. TPT Ltd. 17 March, 1971, No. 35940/68. Heading B8D. [Also in Division B3] Pour and vent openings in the metal end a of a helically wound paper can are sealed by an outer tear strip B<SP>1</SP> and an inner membrane B on opposite sides of the can end, the tear strip having a free end tag portion b and being heat fused to the membrane through the holes so that, on removal of the strip, the membrane is ruptured to provide pouring opening. The tear-strip is a polythene-coated aluminium foil heat-sealed to the can and the membrane, which is of polythene. The sealed can ends are produced by punching a plurality of holes in a tinplate sheet, applying the tear-strips and membrane to opposite sides of the sheet, punching can ends from the sheet, and shaping the edges of the sealed can ends in a curling machine for sealing to the can or container body.
