Abstract

1,262,107. Road toll charging systems. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 13 Feb., 1970 [20 Feb., 1969], No. 9307/69. Headings G4D and G4T. A control unit 11 on a vehicle has two ferritecore aerials responsive respectively to one frequency when the vehicle enters a zone and to a second frequency on leaving the zone. The unit 11 operates a moving coil 9 in one or other direction to operate an escapement whereby a clockwork motor 5 steps a counter. At each step of the counter a disc 16 rotates and light from a lamp 17 passes through a hole in the disc to energize a photo-cell 19 which drives an indicator 24 through a quarter-turn. If the system is operating correctly red R or yellow Y is visible from outside the vehicle when it is respectively inside or outside a metering zone. The detector 11 may be optical.
