A case for lipstick or the like comprises a base 12, a cup holder 14 arranged coaxially of the base 12 and a combined cup and co-ordinating member 16 received within and engaging both the base 12 and the cup holder 14. The combined cup and co-ordinating member 16 includes a cup 42, cam followers 44 and 44<SP>1</SP> engaging internal spiral cams 34 and 34<SP>1</SP> formed on the interior of the cup holder 14, and an integral coordinating extension 46 projecting through the open end 32b of the cup holder 14 into the base 12. The co-ordinating extension 46 and the internal bore of the base 12 are provided with integral splines 48 and 28 respectively which co-operate with each other to preclude relative rotation between the base 12 and the member 16, but permitting longitudinal movement therebetween. A rotatable interconnection between the base 12 and the cup holder 14 is provided by a locking shoulder 50 formed on the cup holder 14 received in a locking groove 26 formed on the inside surface of the base 12. To prevent relative movement between the combined coordinating and cup member 16 and the base 12 in the longitudinal axial direction of the lipstick case during the loading of a lipstick (L Fig. 6) into the cup 42 when in its fully projected position, the upper ends of the splines 28 serve as locking shoulders while the corresponding lower ends of the splines 48 are cut away to provide seats for the corresponding locking shoulders. Circumferentially extending locking seats 40 of the respective cam tracks at the lower end of the cup holder engage the cams 44, 44<SP>1</SP> when the member 16 is in its fully retracted position to prevent inadvertent extension of the lipstick. The case may include a cover and both the base 12 and the cover may be ornamental.
