Abstract

1,261,330. Composite metallic material. OLIN CORP. Nov.6, 1968 [Jan.12, 1968], No. 17317/71. Divided out of 1, 252, 274. Headings C7A and C7D. A corrosion resistant composite comprises a copper or copper alloy matrix, having structural integrity with, and interspersed with 0À1-25% of Zn, In, Cd, Co, Ni, Al or Mg, which is not in solid solution nor in intermetallic form, wherein some of the added metal is exposed to an aqueous medium at the surface of the composite, whereby an insoluble dispersed hydroxide film is formed which is electro-phoretically deposited on the matrix from a positively charged colloid or fine precipitate. The matrix material may be alloyed with one or more of:- Al 0À5-10% Si 0À2-5% Cr 0À5-20% Mn 0À2-10% Ni 0À5-40% Zn 1-35% Be 0À05-4% Mg 0À01-2% Ti 0À01-5% Zr 0À01-2% and Co 0À01-4%; and when the matrix is so alloyed, the dispersed phase may be Fe. When the matrix and the dispersed phase show little tendency to react, the composites may be made by casting and working, in the case of reactive pairs powder metallurgy must be used. In the example very low heating temperatures are used.
