Abstract
1,261,198. Gas scrubber. WELLMANPOWER GAS Inc. 11 Nov., 1968 [9 Nov., 1967 (7)], No. 53217/68. Heading B1R. [Also in Division Cl] A gas containing sulphur di- and tri-oxide is scrubbed with water to remove sulphur trioxide and particulate solids, if present, before the sulphur dioxide is absorbed in a metal sulphite solution (see Division C1), the gas containing the sulphur trioxide being passed upwardly from an inlet 12 to pass through a layer of discrete packing material 22 wetted by upwardly directed sprays of water from nozzles 25, the conditions being such that the packing material is wetted but the water is not carried through the layer. The upper surface of the layer is intermittently sprayed with water from nozzles thereabove. The sulphur di-oxide is absorbed in the absorbent liquid supported on trays 32 and 34, the tray 32 and the perforated portion of tray 34 being sprayed with absorbent as shown.
