Abstract

Sulphur di-oxide is removed from the gases by directing the gases downwardly from an inlet 3 onto the surface of an alkaline washing liquid disposed in the sump 2 of a gas scrubber and a mixture of gas and washing liquid as carried upwardly in a divergent duct as is described in Specification 1,134,449 (Division B1-B2), at the top of the divergent duct water is sprayed from nozzles 13 and the scrubbed gas enters a droplet separator 9 and is discharged therefrom through an outlet 12, liquid separated in separator 9 passes via a pH control device 20 to a settling tank 21, the unit 21 being connected to a conveyor 16 for the admission from a topper of an alkaline substance to a body of the washing liquid contained in a vessel 15 and from which washing liquid is supplied by a pump to the sump 2. Liquid recovered in settling tank 21 passes via line 22 to the sump 2 and sludge can be removed via valve 23. The alkaline substance may be sodium or calcium hydroxide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,134,449.
