Abstract

1,260,930. Electrostatic air-conditioning. C. GRAFVON BERCKHEIM. 2 April, 1969 [11 April, 1968], No. 17359/69. Heading A5R. [Also in Division F4] A device for the electrostatic air-conditioning of an enclosed space 1 comprises an electrode 3, connected to a source of high D.C. voltage mounted in the enclosed space by insulators 2, a counter electrode formed by the earthed boundary surfaces 4-6 of the enclosed space 1 and a device for maintaining the air humidity in the enclosed space 1 at a constant value, preferably 40 to 60% relative humidity. The device may also comprise a thermostatic control for maintaining the temperature within the space 1 constant. The boundary surfaces 4-6 consist, at least partially, of hygroscopic material so that with a set air humidity they have a constant electrical conductivity which is at least ten times greater than that of the air within the enclosed space. The humidity regulating device may comprise an atomiser 11 capable of producing fine particles of twice distilled water or rain water carrying an electrical charge or alternatively it may comprise a drying device capable of decreasing the humidity produced as a result of sweating or evaporation of water. In a further embodiment the humidity regulation device may be as in Figure 2 (not shown) comprising an air circulation system (13), including a drying device (16), a device capable of heating or cooling the air (17) and a humidifying device (18) in which the air is treated with finely divided water.
