Abstract

1,260,900. Rotary positive-displacement motors. CHARBONNAGES DE FRANCE. Oct. 15, 1969 [Oct. 15, 1968], No.50749/69. Heading F1F. A hydraulic motor producing a high torque has a housing 5 containing rotatable cylinders 2a, 2b circumjacent a rotary shaft 1 and comprising abutments 3a, 3b that co-operate with blades 4a, 4b, respectively, on the shaft. Walls 5a, 5b can be deflected by fluid-pressure in annular chambers C 3 a , C 3 b to lock the cylinders. Conduits 10, 11, 20, 21 for hydraulic fluid are formed in the shaft, Figs. 1b and 1c (not shown), and communicate with chamber C 1 a , C 2 a , C 1 b , C 2 b between the blades and the abutments. Hydraulically actuated valves HV1, HV2, HV3 connect the chambers to series connected pumps PP, PG or a tank D, these valves being controlled by a vane HVO, which is actuated by mechanism FC1 on each abutment when engaged by the respective blade. Pressure-limiting devices 18, 19, 26 and a non- return valve 27 are provided as shown. When the valves are set as shown the cylinder 2a is locked and the cylinder 2b is free to rotate with its abutment ahead of the blade 4b as the shaft undergoes angular displacement by the blade 4a, the angular velocity of the cylinder 2b being initially at least twice that of the shaft owing to the chamber C 2 b being charged simultaneously by the pump PG and fluid transfered from the chamber C 2 a . The cylinder 2b revolves at the same velocity as the shaft when its abutment engages with the trailing side of the blade 4b. When the blade 4a approaches the abutment 3a the valve HVO is operated so that the settings of the valves HV1, HV2, HV3 are reversed. Rotation of the shaft thus continues while the cylinder 2b is locked and the cylinder 2a is released. The motor may have more than two cylinders. In another embodiment, Figs. 4 to 6e (not shown), the conduits 20, 21 are replaced by conduits connected to the conduits 11, 10, respectively, the device 26 and valve 27 are dispensed with, and the cylinders are connected to each other and the shaft by differential gears. The mode of operation is generally similar to that of the embodiment shown saving that the gears transmit torque from the unlocked cylinder to the shaft, the torque output being thereby increased.
