Abstract

1,260,520. Pin-hole free films. BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd. 8 Dec., 1970 [15 Dec., 1969], No. 61043/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Division H1] A pin-hole free plastics film suitable for a capacitor dielectric is manufactured by superimposing two films of stretch orientatable plastics material, heating the combination to a stretch orientatable state and stretching in at least one direction thus bonding the two films together. The material may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, a polyester, a polycarbonate, a polysulphonate, polyphenylene oxide or unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. Preferably the films are stretched longitudinally and transversely, simultaneously or sequentially. A film may be stretched in one direction by drawing it over heated rollers, the forward rollers being driven at a greater peripheral speed than the rear rollers. The stretched film is slit down the middle, the portions superimposed and stretched at right angles in a tenter frame in a heated oven.
